How to use this calculator
- Type your input in the box.
- The result updates as you type.
- Use “Copy result” or “Copy link” to share it.
A balanced equation has the same number of atoms of every element, and the same total charge, on both sides. This balancer writes one equation per element and solves the system with exact fractions, so it never rounds and always returns the smallest whole-number coefficients.
Separate species with + and the two sides with = or ->. Write ions with a caret, for example Fe^3+ or SO4^2-. It handles combustion, redox and precipitation reactions.
Worked example
C3H8 + O2 → CO2 + H2O balances to C3H8 + 5 O2 → 3 CO2 + 4 H2O: 3 C, 8 H and 10 O atoms on each side.
Frequently asked questions
Why does it say there are several independent reactions?
Some equations, like H2 + O2 = H2O + H2O2, are really two reactions added together and have infinitely many valid balances. Split them into separate equations.
Can it balance redox equations in acidic solution?
Yes, if you include H^+ and H2O (or OH^- in basic solution) as species. The charge is balanced as an extra equation.
